My Most Recent Reads

Here is a list of the ten books I’ve read most recently. Nothing new here – literally. I think 1912 is the latest original publication date for any of these. Guess I’m living in the past, but I believe the better books, the more enduring stories were written then. When I’ve made it through all those stories, I’ll move on to something more recent.

Title Author
Tarzan of the Apes Edgar Rice Burroughs
Frankenstein Mary Shelley
The Time Machine H.G. Wells
Madame Bovary Gustave Flaubert
The Hunchback of Notre Dame Victor Hugo
The Scarlet Plague Jack London
Ivanhoe Sir Walter Scott
Uncle Tom’s Cabin Harriet Beecher Stowe
Treasure Island Robert Louis Stevenson
Silas Marner George Eliot

My Top Films of the Decade (2000-2009)

Some of my favorite films from the first decade of the 21st century are already on my original Desert Island Movies – Man on Fire, Stranger Than Fiction, Big Fish & The Royal Tenenbaums – so I did not include them on this list. Sort of wish it was more than a top ten. There were several films I wanted to include, but couldn’t find a place for on my list. Maybe there will be a place for them on yours.

Title Director
Snatch Guy Ritchie
Wall-E Andrew Stanton
Gladiator Ridley Scott
Lord of the Rings Peter Jackson
Finding Neverland Marc Forster
High Fidelity Stephen Frears
The Passion of the Christ Mel Gibson
Almost Famous Cameron Crowe
300 Zack Snyder
Taken Pierre Morel

My Playlist 10104

This one of the lists that makes my wife crazy. It combines classical, jazz and some rock and roll. For me, it’s fun finding a convergence of all the different types of music I enjoy.

Hope you enjoy it, too.

With an Empty Heart

In the cold dark night of a bright spring day,
I blinded myself to the facts.
You said you never loved me and were going away,
but I turned a deaf ear and tried not to act

Let down.
Torn apart.
Rid of my senses,
with an empty heart.

I loved you more than sight and sound.
I guess you didn’t.
You sent me looking for love in the lost and found,
but I couldn’t

Find what was lost.
Think what to look for.
I was rid of my senses,
with an empty heart.

The fury of love has been replaced,
by the silence of my sorrow.
When I wake up to another day,
I can’t believe it’s already tomorrow.

Because you let me down.
You tore me apart.
Rid me of my senses,
and emptied my heart.

Before Sorrow

Sadness walks a tightrope –
Less than the depths of sorrow,
Greater than the pangs of conscience.

Sadness falls as tears –
Filling the reservoir of pain,
Releasing the overflow of emotion.

Sadness calls.
Sadness overwhelms.
Sadness dies
And gives way to haunting memories.

Sadness lies down with strangers –
It fills the lungs of communities,
In it’s breath is a whisper of redemption.

Sadness silently laments.
Sadness screams for salvation.
Sadness haunts
The integrity of fading memories.
